Rights and Responsibilities

Part of successful community organizing is developing and implementing transparent, rights and responsibilities so that organizers and community participants are clear on what they are taking part in and are able to share in accountability.

The "Taking a Stand Project" was sparked by a community call-to-arms. A young woman from the Valencia Gardens Housing Community in San Francisco asked people to make a pledge and take a stand against police brutality after 4 young men in her community were brutally beaten by undercover officers in San Francisco.

THE TAKING A STAND PROJECT has evolved into a visual campaign and platform for people to express why it's important to become an active agent for justice, education and healing in their communities.

The main goal of this project is to highlight people who are actively working and supporting solutions to inequity and injustice and to express to others the power of "Taking a Stand."

Another of the goal of this project is to hold SFPD accountable to the agreements they have made in their General Orders.

The spark and push for more community collaboration was ignited by an act of "excessive force" by the SFPD on 4 young men from Valencia Gardens housing community in San Francisco and by the out cry for help by a young mother from the V.G's to engage her community in creating "Taking a Stand SF".

Here you will find the journey and reflection of people engaging and collaborating with community based organizations, individuals and city agencies in order to heal and build mutual respect and understanding in the community.
